Read this if your child is starting Kindergarten soon
Kindergarten is the start of your child’s school journey. It is that initial step where your child determines if they like school or not and it is always beneficial to start liking school earlier than later. As a parent, there are many steps you can take to ensure that your child enjoys their time in kindergarten and here are a few things you can do:
- Talk to other mums who are also in the same situation and help your child make some new friends before the first of school.
- Make sure that your child’s manners are well, and they know how to address teachers, other students, and staff of the school.
- Ensure your child knows which toilet to go to and that they can go to the toilet on their own.
- Teach your child to have a sense of responsibility and that they need to bring home their lunch box, pencil case, water bottle, clothes, and any of your child’s belongings that they take to school.
- If your child is from a non-English speaking background, practice English before kindergarten to ensure that your child know how to communicate.
- Teach your child how to read and write the alphabet and some basic words.
- Teach your child how to read and write numbers. For those parents who have already taught these skills long ago, perhaps teach them how to add and subtract too.
- Teach your child the Australian money system so they can correctly count money to buy food at the canteen.
- Teach your child how to tie their shoelace. Teachers hate tying them for students!
- Teach your child how to read the clock! Many young students still struggle with this, and this skill is important for young kids!
